February 2014 Script Sales

By Script Sales

At long last: a movie about the early video game industry. Console Wars will pit Nintendo versus Sega, the fantasy of every 80s video game geek. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg directing–arguably, an ideal choice. Based on, if not very loosely, Dennis Rodman’s exploits in North Korea, Peter Chernin is producing the comedy Diplomats. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill together again for a film based on Olympic hero-turned-terrorism-suspect Richard Jewell. And amongst a handful of drama and crime novel adaptations, a few no-brainer sequels: We’re the Millers, Space Jam (long overdue), and The Lego Movie. Other script sales include: – Sony will produce the horror The Bringing, based on the real-life mystery (and perhaps supernatural event) of a woman found dead in an LA hotel. – Even older video games are entirely adaptable: Vertigo and Warner Bros. taking the helm on the action/adventure Minecraft. – Still alive and kicking in…

Tripper Clancy

By Exclusive Interviews

– Tripper Clancy, writer of Henry the Second (2010 Script Pipeline Screenwriting Contest Grand Prize Winner), and the upcoming Stuber (Fox), The Ambassadors (Fox), and Shedd (Paramount). In 2014, Tripper was hired to write the Kevin James adventure/comedy Stranded for Sony Pictures, and in 2017 was brought on board to write an adaptation for the critically acclaimed novel The Art of Fielding. You won the 2010 Screenwriting Competition with the comedy Henry the Second, and after industry circulation by Script Pipeline (with a very small handful of rejections), you secured representation relatively quickly. What has that process been like the last couple years? I was lucky enough to land my first agent about a month after moving to LA. Sure, it was a tiny agent at a tiny agency (and I had to pay formy own copies when a spec went out!), but I thought, “Holy shit, this is easy!” Five…

Lost – Pilot

By Essential Reading - Screenplays and Pilots

It’s overwritten, far too long for a typical one-hour pilot, the writing itself is dense, the whole thing reads like a novel. . . and yet, it’s absolutely gripping. The pilot for Lost at first seems to defy everything you learned in TV Writing 101, but at the same time, gives the reader a clear expectation of where the show is going, who the major players will be, why this would not be the typical disaster story, and such a unique sense of tone and atmosphere, it’s no wonder Lost ended up becoming one of the greatest–if not the greatest–one-hour dramas of all time. All bookended by the first of many (many) cliffhangers, and a line that would sufficiently sum up the series as a whole: “Guys–where are we?” Read the Lost Pilot

January 2014 Script Sales

By Script Sales

Script Pipeline contest winner Tripper Clancy, who in December sold The Ambassadors to Fox, will write Shedd for Paramount Animation, based on an original idea from Paramount President Adam Goodman. Announced last year, Choose Your Own Adventure is a go, from the series allowing readers to “control” their story–although chances are the theater audience won’t control the plot of the movie (maybe someday). Divergent, written by Script Pipeline alum Evan Daugherty, will have its sequel, Insurgent, re-written by Akiva Goldsman. Brian Duffield penned the original draft. Thor 3 is set, and Daniel Craig will star in a spy thriller where his name is something other than James Bond. Other script sales include: – Chip N’ Dale and the Rescue Rangers get their first mainstream feature break. The project will be mixed live-action/CGI. – The sports drama The Battered Bastards of Baseball, from a true story most baseball fans aren’t even…

November 2013 Script Sales

By Script Sales

The superhero movie trend isn’t going anywhere for a while, with a number of script sales based on comics/graphic novels, including Sleeper, to be produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. And after what is soon to be six Lord of the Rings films, Tolkien himself (well, an actor playing Tolkien) will hit the big screen in a biopic produced by Fox Searchlight. Napoleon, too, gets the biopic treatment. Rupert Sanders directing. Seems like this is the case every month, but it was far more noticeable in November: nearly 100% of script sales were either a pitch, an adaptation, or material based on a true story. Other script sales include: – For those who haven’t heard of Key and Peele, you will soon, in a Judd Apatow-helmed project. – You had us at “Untitled Stan Lee Pitch,” Columbia Pictures. – Monster High, based on the Mattel line of dolls. –…

Morgan Von Ancken

By Exclusive Interviews

– Morgan von Ancken, writer of Cutting Numbers (2013 Script Pipeline Screenwriting Contest winner). After being announced as the Grand Prize winner, Morgan later signed with agency powerhouse UTA. Cutting Numbers is a unique premise in a genre (essentially an indie dramedy) usually devoid of true originality. How’d the concept come about? My first job out of college was a temping gig where I transcribed thousands and thousands of handwritten names into a spreadsheet. One of the ways I coped with the monotony was by inventing a super sad series of little games. In my favorite one, I pretended that each name I invoiced was someone whose life—in some anonymous, inexplicable way—I was saving. The responsibility was empowering, and I remember extrapolating each person’s personality and appearance from their name and handwriting. It kept me sharp, too. If I screwed up and skipped a name, that person’s blood was on my…
