Jonathan Almanzar & Daniel Morris

Churned

2026 Screenwriting Contest - Quarterfinalist

Jonathan Almanzar writes darkly comedic, character-driven stories rooted in lived experience and Americana.
Born to a Cherokee/Welsh mother, a Mexican/Navajo father AND carrying an Arabic last name; Jonathan grew up navigating identity from every angle and learned early how to create his own narrative.
Before screenwriting, he worked as a prison guard, farm hand, and steelworker before going on to co-found Chick’nCone, a global fast-casual brand that grew from a New York City food truck into an international franchise.
After the pandemic pivoted the business, Jonathan turned fully toward storytelling, bringing a deep well of real-world experience to his writing. His work lives in the space between grounded emotion and absurdity, often exploring ordinary people pulled into extraordinary situations through a darkly comedic lens.
His scripts have been finalists in the Final Draft Big Break, placed at Austin Film Festival, and selected as a Monthly Feature on The Black List website.

Daniel Morris has spent half his life honing his craft. His love for discovering the essence of a story and then bringing it to life through the page and onto the screen permeates all his work – be it developing the brand persona for a major corporation or crafting Top 10 Big Break Finalist and blcklst.com feature screenplays. Becoming a single father of two doubled his motivation, driving him to read, write, rewrite and create more than ever before. He loves the dramatic, the comedic, the scientific, the holistic – all the ‘ics’, without the ‘ick’ – and searching for the good that hides in the weird, gray areas of life.
