Matthew Syrett is an award-winning screenwriter, filmmaker, and producer whose work blends emotionally driven characters with distinctive worlds. A 2024 graduate of the AFI Conservatory's Screenwriting Program, he was a finalist for Tribeca's Vital Stories program and winner of AFI's Writers' Room Ready competition. His directorial debut documentary, Admission Possible, received the 2026 Jury Award at the Berkshire International Film Festival. As a producer, he has created documentary projects recognized with Academy Award, Emmy Award, and Sundance honors, and served as a Senior Story Producer on Roku's Game Changers and Netflix's MerPeople. Set within unconventional worlds – including cryonics, contemporary art curation, advertising, and collegiate rowing – his screenplays and television projects explore themes of ambition, memory, identity, and ethics, drawing on extensive real-world research. His work is driven by a fascination with the moral dilemmas that arise when human systems collide with entrenched dogma and the needs of the people they were meant to serve. Whether writing grounded drama, elevated genre, or dark comedy, Syrett is drawn to stories that challenge audiences while remaining deeply human. He lives in Los Angeles and teaches film at SFCC in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
