Some of the most notable script sales for December 2019: - Jimmy Warden’s untitled bear spec has found a home with Lord/Miller (Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s production company), Radio Silence, and Universal Pictures. The horror/comedy is described as a cross between Good Boys and The Revenant, and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct. - Sanjay Shah’s untitled script about an Indian boy band was acquired by Universal Pictures, Marc Platt Productions, and Lighthouse Management & Media. Here are some of the most notable script sales from the month of November: Erin Cressida Wilson is attached to write The Invisible Woman for Universal, based on a pitch by Elizabeth Banks. Banks is set to produce, direct, and star as well. John Logan is set to write a currently untitled Michael Jackson biopic for GK Films. The life rights were acquired from the Jackson estate. J.T. Petty to write and direct Appetite for Productivity Media and David S. Goyer's Phantom Four Films. The thriller follows a mother's investigation into her daughter's disappearance, which leads to terrible consequences. Ryan Ridley's script Renfield found a home with Skybound Entertainment and Universal. The horror/drama follows the character R.M. Renfield from Bram Stoker's Dracula. Indie Co-Written by Script Pipeline Contest Winner

Writers Prarthana Mohan and Script Pipeline contest winner Kay Tuxford saw their script The MisEducation of Bindu make a rapid ascent through crowdfunding. The dramedy, which puts a new spin on the coming-of-age story, is seen through the perspective of a 14-year-old Indian girl adjusting to her first high school experience. The project was selected for Seed & Spark’s #HometownHeroes campaign, and Mark and Jay Duplass (Togetherness) came on board as executive producers in 2017. The film premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival in 2019. Kay and her writing partner Lily Dahl won the 2016 Script Pipeline TV Writing Competition with their true story drama pilot Queen of Thieves (aka 40 Elephants). She later sent the screenplay for Bindu to the Script and Film Pipeline team, who instantly saw its potential as a standout character-driven indie. October was a lighter month for spec sales. New Line Cinema and A-Major Media picked up Elliott San’s untitled spec last month. Although details are being kept under wraps, it’s described as a mind-bending genre tale that centers on an Asian-American lead. Meanwhile, TriStar Pictures, Unique Features, and Arlook Group are moving forward with Cooper McMains’ spec The Tip. The thriller follows a waitress who finds herself in a dangerous situation after receiving a $10,000 tip. John Strickland will direct. Robert Zappia’s 2018 Blood List script The Devil’s Light found a home with Lionsgate and Gold Circle Films. The supernatural thriller follows a nun who performs exorcisms while combating a sexist church that believes only priests should be allowed to perform exorcisms. Los Angeles Times Interviews Script Pipeline

In the January 19th, 2018 edition of the LA Times, Chad Clough, Script Pipeline Executive and CEO of Pipeline Media Group, was quoted on the state of the spec market: "Right now, the industry wants original voices. . . . There’s still a need for an excellent script.” Writer Chris Erskine, gleaning interviews from Clough, screenwriter Nicholas Kazan (Reversal of Fortune), and producer Elizabeth Cantillon, commented on the decline of the spec script and how a resurgence may be forthcoming: "Clough, of Script Pipeline, says the spec market could be---like old vinyl or vintage guitars---a thing of the past and the future. He cites an increasing voracious marketplace, as evidenced by Netflix’s pledge to produce 80 new original movies in 2018. Fox Comedy “Stuber” Written by Script Pipeline Winner

The action-comedy Stuber, written by Script Pipeline Screenwriting Contest winner Tripper Clancy, stars Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, Silicon Valley), Betty Gilpin (Glow), and Iko Uwais (The Raid). Jonathan Goldstein (Horrible Bosses) and John Francis Daley (Bones) produced. The film released in July 2019 and was screened at the 2019 SXSW festival. WATCH THE TRAILER 20th Century Fox picked up the script, based on a pitch developed by Tripper and his manager. Tripper won for Script Pipeline Screenwriting, and soon after, Script Pipeline execs linked him with management, paving the way for projects set up at Sony, Fox, Hasbro, Paramount, and other studios. He's adapting the acclaimed novel The Art of Fielding for Mandalay and a film for Amazon, High Five.

A few interesting specs found their way to production companies last month. Todd Komarnicki’s action/thriller spec Savior found a home with Oakhurst Entertainment, Lightbridge Entertainment, and Guy Walks Into a Bar, Inc. The story follows a group of mercenaries who plan to set off World War III through a series of seemingly unrelated terrorist attacks. Meanwhile, Paul Feig’s Feigco and Universal Pictures have picked up Meredith Dawson’s romantic comedy spec When Michael Met Carrie… and Other People. Dawson is set to direct as well. New Line Cinema (along with Farah Films & Management, Vertigo Entertainment, and Cinestate) scooped up Shut In in an auction. Written by Melanie Toast, the thriller spec follows a single mother who must protect her children and herself after her violent ex takes her captive. The uniquely iconic dramedy stars Academy Award-Nominee Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network, Batman vs. Superman), Mike O'Connell, comedian Jim Gaffigan, Ann Dowd (The Handmaid's Tale), and an ensemble cast. Script Pipeline Executive Director Chad Clough produced and raised financing for the indie. Henry Dunham's The Standoff at Sparrow Creek released in January 2019, featuring the ensemble cast of James Badge Dale (Rubicon), Brian Geraghty (The Hurt Locker), Chris Mulkey (Whiplash), Happy Anderson (Mindhunter), Robert Armayo (Game of Thrones), and Gene Jones (The Hateful Eight). Script Pipeline Contest Writer Sells Show to Fox in 2019

Runner-up in the Script Pipeline TV Writing Competition, Laura Bensick sold her show Everyday Insanity to Fox. Ken Olin (This is Us) and Sterling K. Brown producing. The drama series addresses mental illness within three different families who come together to form one supportive group. Laura placed with the hourlong drama The Mother in the 2016 Script Pipeline season, besting over 2,500 other pilots. In 2019, Bensick’s autobiographical play Life in Paradox, premiered in Los Angeles. Everyday Insanity is Laura’s first TV show sale.

Feature Film “Between,” Developed by Script Pipeline, Premieres at Sundance

Writer Rob Nelms was hired to pen the script Between after introductions to director David Ocanas by Script Pipeline CEO Chad Clough. In March 2004, the film was greenlit for production and principal photography started in late May in Tijuana, Mexico. The lower-budget feature starred Poppy Montgomery (Unforgettable, Without a Trace), Danny Pino, and Jose Yenque (Traffic). It made its Sundance premiere in 2004 and later aired exclusively on Lifetime. According to David Ocanas, “After struggling for months trying to find the right writer for a film project I wished to produce and direct, one call to Chad Clough of Script Pipeline made all the difference. Details about its plot are being kept under wraps, but Escape Room’s Adam Robitel is attached to direct. Another untitled supernatural thriller spec landed with Paramount Pictures and The Picture Co., this one written by Jacob Chase.
